Maybe one of your children already bears one of the names in the top 100 baby names.
Or perhaps you are thinking about choosing one of these popular names... but...
"What happens if a name in this list becomes less popular?"
Absolutely nothing, really.
Remember this:
All the very popular names will, in time, become less popular.
There's nothing you can do about it!
And... in time... they will no doubt become popular again!
On the other hand, you might be asking yourself
"What happens if my "unique" name is rising in popularity?"
In this case, consider the following:
all unique names run the risk of becoming popular over time
your child will still bear a name specially selected by you
you will not be the first to tread this path!
Don't forget - whatever name you choose for your baby, it will become your baby's name. It won't be number 1 or number 48 or number 97. Once the name is given to a person, it ceases to be a number, meaning something quite different.
Sophie With her name relative Sophia doing very well in 6th place, Sophie has jumped into the top 100 baby names charts for the first time since 1915! Ranked last year at 124, Sophie has made the most progress out of all the names in the top 100. Another variant, Sofia, is also doing well, rising twenty places to rank at 35.
Bailey Back into the top 100 after a three year break, Bailey steps up 29 places to take 83rd place. Her highest rank was 60 in 1998. Will she go for gold this time round - or will she retire gracefully? A practical yet attractive name, Bailey is also used as a boys' name, and her male counterpart currently ranks in 666th place.
Aubrey Aubrey featured in last year's movers and shakers, having entered the top 100 listings with a bang. Last ranking at 941 in 2002 for the boys, Aubrey has taken on new life as a girls' name. She ranked 92nd last year, and stands in 69th place this year - excellent progress. As I said last year... "If you're looking for something different, that may become popular - this could be the name for you."
Jocelyn Jocelyn has been very quietly making her way up the baby name ladder, and this year has claimed 50th place from last year's 73rd rank.
What happened to last years' movers and shakers for girls?
Jayla Last year I predicted that Jayla would be "sure to stamp her mark on the baby names lists " - and declared this name "officially hot." I will now have to declare Jayla a little cooler, as she has not repeated her impressive 96 place leap this time, instead falling 33 spots to rank at 132.
Addison Addison continues to impress. Smashing into the top one hundred last year to place at an amazing 28th rank, she has now leapt to 11th place. Will she amaze us all with a shock ranking next year? At this rate, anything's possible! Meaning "son of Adam" here is a classic case of a boy's name making it big with the girls. This name screams "Why not?" while giving baby Addison credibility, strength and a taste of that oh-so-popular name Madison - minus the "M".
Valeria and Layla Valeria was a new entrant to the top 100 last year, but has dropped to 98th place this time round. Layla was in 100th place last year, but has done well this time, now at 85th spot.
More girls doing well within the top 100 baby names include:
There's incredibly little moving or shaking going on with these boys' names; many of them have moved up or down only one slot, and with two new names - Brady and Cooper - there's not much to shout about.
Jayden Jayden was one of my movers and shakers two years ago. Last year he moved up another four places - but this time rejoins the movers having increased his ranking by 31 places, now standing in 18th spot. He entered the top 100 baby name lists in 1994. Could we be looking at a future top-tenner?
Brayden Brayden was also on my radar two years ago, and now he's back, having moved up fifteen places to rank at 64. I wondered last year if his meteoric rise was over. It seems not - at least, not for now.
Wyatt Wyatt's been around since the baby name records began, popping in and out of the top one thousand. He joined the top one hundred list in 2004, and has made steady progress, now ranking at 69 from 82 last year.
Last year's movers and shakers...
Let's see what happened to baby names I picked out from the stats last time around.
Tristan Tristan moved up twenty seven places last year - but in the 2007 stats, he's dropped one place to 87th spot.
Aiden Aiden's not doing badly - up another five places to rank at 27.
Carson Into the top 100 baby names lists last year, Carson has now fallen three places to rank at 90.
Landon Landon hasn't done an awful lot since last year - up only one place, now ranking at 49.
Keep an eye on these young men too:
