how to choose baby names!

Thanks for visiting the site. Oh, what's my name? I'm Claire, and my name means bright or clear and is enjoying a recent rise in popularity ranked at number 66 in the US name charts!

I have a simple, solid, one-syllable name. Just like my two brothers. I like my name, but I often wished it were more interesting. Life was kind to me; my husband is Bulgarian, and so has provided me with, at the very least, an interesting surname which I think complements my first name.

Choosing a name for our son was difficult. Trying to reconcile two cultures in a name presents an interesting challenge. We found a name that is easily comprehensible in both languages and that we both liked. It took a long time to find, but we are pleased with the result!

There are so many books about baby names and a mountain of lists on paper and online to be digested; but very little original advice or information surrounding the actual job of choosing a name for your baby. And it's such a fun subject to write about as it is personal to each one of us. We all have a name.

So with this site, I am hoping to provide a push in the right direction, with ideas, overviews, warnings, a few opinions for what they are worth and a little reassurance along the way.
