The Social Security Administration has finally published the most popular baby names 2006! Here are the top ten names for girls and boys in the United States for 2006: Girls

Emily - congratulations Emily - holding her crown since 1996.
Emma - keeps her place at number two!
Madison - she also keeps her ranking from last time.
Isabella - on the rise again from sixth spot last year.
Ava - another jump for Ava from ninth position in last year's figures.
Abigail - drops two places.
Olivia - also down two places.
Hannah - down from seventh place last time round.
Sophia - up by two places and new to the top ten!
Samantha - down two places.

Ashley drops out of the top ten - now at number twelve. Boys

Jacob - still at number one, he's been there since 1999.
Michael - keeps his place at number two.
Joshua - also staying put.
Ethan - up one place.
Matthew - drops one place.
Daniel - up one spot.
Christopher - up by two places.
Andrew - down two from sixth place last time.
Anthony - drops one place.
William - up one place and back into the top ten after a year's break.

Joseph drops out of the top ten - to eleventh position.

What could we predict about the up-and-coming top rankings for boys' names in the US for 2006? To tell you the truth, there is likely to be very little movement at all within the top twenty. Which is why I hesitate to write detailed predictions for this set of names. It's possible that the top ten rankings will be exactly the same as last year's. Anthony may possibly improve his ranking from his current 8th position. And will Alexander make it into the top ten? Further down, Noah could break into the top 20. And Samuel is waiting in the wings, too. Angel, at 32 did make a good jump from his rank of 43 in 2005 - could he surprise us with a leap into the top 20?
